Peace, the last email I sent was an article I wrote titled “Why Social Media Works Against Artists (And What To Do About It)”, but it was still on my mind, so I recorded a Podcast episode exploring it further. In it, I explore my new personal approach and just speak on being committed to what you want and letting that be what dictates how you move in these spaces.

I notice how this online stuff was polluting my mind. As a family man, things that don’t support the family don’t make much sense as a focus. At the same time, I found myself concerned about numbers. The wrong numbers: Subscribers, Followers, Views, etc. The reality is that having subscribers doesn’t mean anyone cares to watch; Views aren’t influence or affection. If I post a video that gets 5 views, but it drives one sale that earns me $500, it makes more sense than working for 10,000 views that would pay me $100.

This newsletter has made things very real for me, because it’s made it about value. I pay for Beehiiv, which is a mailing list service. The more subscribers, the higher the cost. That means that if subscribers on the list aren’t adding value, they’re extracting it. In this case, it’s money, but for most of you, it’s time, effort, energy, and resources - including money.

Bottom line, I had to ask myself, “Why am I here?” Why am I on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, etc? Am I there to be entertained? Am I there to promote my business? Am I there to engage with like minds? And, am I getting what I’m there to get? That simple shift in logic has freed me mentally. I don’t count views or subscribers; I count rewarding conversations, sales, and revenue drivers. No more coming to Instagram to promote and losing an hour to various forms of rage bait.
